“Does My Child Need a Tooth Extraction?”

A tooth with a lot of pain, infection or that is very broken down may require a tooth extraction. In these specific situations most kids feel much better 1-2 days after the extraction than they felt when the infected tooth was still in their gums.

In any case, rest assured that we reserve dental extraction as a last-resort solution when the tooth cannot be saved using a filling or a crown.

If our doctor does decide that dental extraction is necessary, there is no cause for alarm. With the help of local anesthetics, laughing gas, and specialized instruments for small pediatric mouths, tooth removal is a quick and relatively painless procedure.

How Children’s Tooth Extraction Works

Tooth extraction is a straightforward, routine dental procedure that is typically completed in a single visit.

Our pediatric dental specialists will gently guide your child through every step of the process, asking and answering questions, and explaining exactly what they’re doing. This helps to ease your child’s anxieties while making sure that they feel comforted and supported.

So that you know what to expect, we’ve listed each step of the extraction procedure below:

Numbing the Tooth

The first thing the doctor will do is apply a local anesthetic to numb the gum tissue around the affected tooth. This deadens the tooth, ensuring that your child feels very little discomfort during the removal.

Removing the Tooth

Using a special surgical tool, the doctor will begin gently loosening the tooth. If the tooth is badly decayed or broken below the gumline, the doctor may have to make a small incision in the gum tissue to fully remove the tooth. Because the tissue has been numbed, any incision will cause little to no discomfort.

Cleaning and Aftercare

Once the tooth has been removed, the doctor will clean the empty socket to help prevent future infection.

Cost of a Children’s Dental Extraction in Denver

With a typical insurance plan, a tooth removal usually costs about $50 – $100+  out of pocket. Without insurance, expect to pay approximately $200+ per tooth.

Keep in mind, that no dental practice can give you an accurate quote over the phone. Each child’s teeth are unique, and a treatment plan must be tailored to their specific needs. We can only give you an accurate quote once you bring your child to our Denver dental office for an oral exam.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many people believe wisdom teeth removal is a rite of passage. In reality, wisdom teeth only need to be removed if they become impacted or otherwise interfere with your jaw and teeth.
Thanks to modern dental techniques and equipment, tooth extractions are virtually painless. Many patients are surprised by how quick and easy the procedure actually is! Of course, some discomfort is to be expected, but we will provide you with aftercare instructions to help keep you as comfortable as possible during the quick healing process.
About an hour after your procedure, you may remove the gauze sponges that have been placed in your mouth and have something to eat. Be sure to eat only soft foods for the first 24 hours. Be sure to avoid hot foods and drinking from straws for several hours.
We will provide you with aftercare instructions specific to your needs at your appointment. Here are some general things you can do after a tooth extraction or dental surgery more generally to minimize the risk of complications and encourage a speedy recovery:
  • Avoid spitting, mouth rinsing, blowing your nose, using a straw, and smoking in the first 24 hours after tooth extraction.
  • Don’t touch the extraction site with your finger or tongue.
  • Avoid hot foods and drinks.
  • Don’t take aspirin because it inhibits blood clotting.
  • Avoid physical activities and exercise.
For simple tooth removal, the recovery time is usually around 7 to 10 days. However, for more complex cases, such as surgical tooth extraction, or wisdom tooth removal, expect a recovery period of around 2 weeks. No matter the complexity of the procedure, you should feel very little discomfort during recovery.
Barring any unforeseen complications, expect a typical tooth extraction to take around 45 minutes or less.

My first visit was wonderful. The staff was very helpful seeing I had more than one kiddo. My kids didn’t mind waiting for their cleaning seeing the waiting room had just enough toys to entertain but not be overwhelming.. The office was VERY CLEAN & TAILORED TO TODDLERS. I was shocked by the quality of the exam rooms. 5 stars! Great quality healthcare! Doctor Leslie was great with my kids and made them super comfortable before proceeding with the check up. My kiddos came home excited to bush! Thank you for a wonderful first experience with pediatric dentistry. Excited to learn more about growing little teeth at our next visit!

Everyone here has been so great with my daughter. They make her feel heard, safe, and secure when she is getting treatment. I moved further out and make the drive just so I know my daughter will continue to have a great experience going to the denist.
