Children less than 3 years of age, or those who cannot spit, should use a rice size smear of fluoride toothpaste with adult assistance while brushing. This provides strengthening fluoride to vulnerable newly erupted teeth, but in a small enough amount to be safe for young children even if they swallow some of the paste or bubbles.

Children 3 to 6 years of age should use a pea size amount of fluoride toothpaste with adult assistance while brushing and spit out the excess.
